Abstract

Herein this work, we experimentally characterize parametrically designed toroidal propellers and compare them to conventional propellers which have been designed in OpenProp in terms of static thrust, dynamic thrust, and acoustic performance. Two conventional propellers and seven toroidal propellers each deviating slightly from a nominal toroidal design were tested. For the parametric representation used in this study, propellers designed in OpenProp outperformed toroidal propellers with respect to all thrust metrics considered in this paper. No statistically significant difference was found in their acoustic performance.
